General guidelines for compatible phones:
- Your phone must be unlocked by your previous carrier.
- Your phone must be compatible with GSM network technology.
Consumer Cellular Bring Your Own Device, lets you purchase and enjoy the same plans presented above.
Are Consumer Cellular phones unlocked?
NO, Consumer Cellular phones are originally locked to their network. Devices purchased for use with Consumer Cellular’s Service are designed for exclusive use with Consumer Cellular’s Service and equipment. You agree that you will not make any modifications to the Device or programming to enable the Device to operate on any other system. Consumer Cellular may, at its sole and absolute discretion, modify the programming to enable the operation of the Device on other systems.
Phones purchased from Consumer Cellular must remain on their service for a designated period before they can be unlocked. After that, customers may request that the phone be unlocked so long as the device has been paid in full, and the account in question is not past due. If your device was originally purchased from another carrier, the phone would be subject to that carrier’s unlocking policies.
Here are all the terms that must be met for the Consumer Cellular to unlock their phone:
- you have paid for your Device in full;
- the equipment has been active on Consumer Cellular’s service for at least six months and the account is in good standing (i.e. it has no past due amount or unpaid balance owed to Consumer Cellular);
- your device has not been reported lost or stolen; and
- Consumer Cellular has the unlock code or can reasonably obtain it from the manufacturer.
Consumer Cellular may allow you to pay a fee instead of meeting the above criteria. The fee will be set by Consumer Cellular in their sole discretion.

The best and probably the simplest way, at least for those familiar with online purchasing, would be to visit the Consumer Cellular’s web site and select the plan, phone, or BRING YOUR OWN DEVICE option and complete the purchase. TO be exact, you will only pay for the plan and phone (if you are buying one), the SIM card is FREE.
Alternative options to Consumer Cellular online store (the most popular one):

- Best Buy
- Amazon
Where to Buy Consumer Cellular phone?
If you are buying a Consumer Cellular phone, the best place is without a doubt the Consumer Cellular’s online store. Online they offer the widest range of phones for you to choose for.
The second-best alternative would be to visit one of their local representatives. TARGET stores are the Consumer Cellular’s official representative, thus you can always visit a local Target store and try your luck there. Aside from Target, there are other independent retailers. To locate any of these, visit the link provided in the previous section.
Best Buy sometimes offers a very narrow selection of Consumer Cellular phones, however, they are often out of stock.
Amazon is another place where occasionally you can find Consumer Cellular’s phones. However, the availability is not regular and we recommend you rather visit Consumer Cellular’s online store if you plan to shop online.
eBay is another alternative. However, it is even less reliable than Amazon, thus be advised to visit Consumer Cellular’s online store instead.
Does Consumer Cellular Offers Service on AT&T and T-Mobile?
No.The Consumer Cellular plans are limited to the Consumer Cellular SIM cards, which may be used on phones purchased at the Consumer Cellular or on unlocked GSM devices purchased elsewhere. Since AT&T and T-Mobile are two widely spread GSM providers, there are many of their phones (unlocked) brought over to the Consumer Cellular network. However, that doesn’t mean that the Consumer Cellular services are used on AT&T and T-Mobile.
