Cricket Wireless is an American wireless service provider owned by AT&T. It offers high-quality mobile devices, affordable services, nationwide coverage, and reliable services with no contract to millions of subscribers across the United States.
If you are planning to become one of Cricket’s subscribers you will have to activate your Cricket SIM card in order to use the provider’s services. Before you do so, you must prepare certain items, which you will need during the activation process.
- If you are planning to bring your own phone, you must unlock it.
- Check your own phone’s compatibility with Cricket.
- Get a SIM card or a new Cricket phone, which comes with a SIM card.
- Prepare your phone number.
- Prepare your Cricket account PIN.
What to Do Before Cricket SIM Card Kit Activation
The most important thing to do before activating Cricket SIM card is to get a phone and/or SIM card. Cricket Wireless enables customers to either buy a new phone directly from the provider or to bring their own device.
If you wish to buy a new Cricket phone, you can do so online or in-store. The company offers all kinds of devices, ranging from basic flip phones to most advanced smartphones from some of the most reputable brands, such as Samsung, Apple, Motorola, etc.
On the other hand, if you prefer to bring your own device, you must make sure the device is compatible with Cricket’s services.
Depending on whether you have already purchased the service or not and if you already have a device or are planning to purchase one, these are the things you must do before activating your Cricket SIM card:
For New Cricket Customers (Service Needed, BYOP):
- In case you bring your own phone, you must unlock it. In case your existing phone is not yet unlocked, you must contact your original wireless carrier and ask them to unlock it. In most cases, the representative will either unlock it remotely or walk you through the simple process, as long as you meet the provider’s unlock requirements.
- If you decide to bring your own phone, you must also check the device’s compatibility. Some unlocked devices are not compatible with Cricket’s network, however, most of them are. You can check the phone’s compatibility with Cricket’s Device ID (IMEI) checker on the provider’s official website at cricketwireless.com/cell-phones/bring-your-phone.
- Get the SIM card. If you bring your own device, you must purchase the Universal Cricket SIM card kit.
- Choose the plan for your device. You can do so online or with the help of a sales agent.
- Locate your order number and your phone number. Both numbers are located in your order confirmation email and on your packing slip. You will have to provide this information during the Cricket SIM card activation process.
- Prepare your four-digit Cricket account PIN. In case you forgot your Cricket PIN, you can contact the provider’s customer support to check.
For New Cricket Customers (Service and Device Needed):
- Get a phone. If you buy an original Cricket device, the Cricket SIM card, which is essential for using Cricket’s services, will be included in the package. You can purchase a Cricket phone online or in-store.
- Choose the plan for your device. You can do so online or with the help of a sales agent.
- Locate your order number and your phone number.
- Prepare your four-digit Cricket account PIN.
For Current Cricket Customers (Service Purchased):
- If you already have the phone, the SIM card, and the service, you can simply activate your account. Follow the Cricket SIM card activation process described below, depending on whether you ordered your Cricket service online at cricketwireless.com or at a non-Cricket retailer.
What Kind of SIM Card Does Cricket Use?
A SIM card is a removable card that connects the mobile device to the Cricket network. Cricket’s Universal SIM card kit includes pop-out SIM cards in all sizes.
There are three different SIM card sizes – Standard (Mini), Micro, and Nano. As different phones require different SIM card sizes, Cricket offers all three sizes in the same package, so that you can choose the right size that will fit your phone’s SIM card slot.
In addition to the pop-out SIM cards in all three sizes, Cricket’s Universal SIM card kit also includes everything else you need to activate your unlocked, compatible phone on the Cricket network.
