In the midst of a casual evening at my place, a friend wandered in and caught sight of my sleek new smartphone and tablet. His eyes widened with curiosity, and as he marveled at the cutting-edge gadgets, he couldn’t help but inquire, “How on earth did you snag these for free?” Little did he know, the intriguing tale behind my acquisition unfolded through the realms of government programs designed to bridge the digital divide. So, let me take you on a journey into the realm of free government phones and tablets, where modern technology meets tales of accessibility and opportunity.
Way to Get a Free Government Phone And Tablet in 2024
20 years ago, low-income people were only able to receive entry-level cell phones through the one government assistance program that provided free phones at the time – Lifeline. However, things have changed. Nowadays, Lifeline companies offer more advanced Android smartphones and even iPhones. Moreover, since the government has launched a new government assistance program during the pandemic called the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), wireless companies that participate in both assistance programs (Lifeline and ACP) offer amazing smartphones, free monthly plans, as well as government tablets with a huge discount of up to $100 per device. Let’s dive deeper into these two government assistance programs, as this way you will learn more about how I got my fabulous free government phone and tablet.
Government Lifeline Program Free Phone and Tablet
The Lifeline program, established in the 1980s, focuses on aiding those facing financial constraints in accessing communication services. Lifeline provides a $9.25 monthly discount on telecommunication bills, with an increased $34.25 discount for eligible customers on Tribal lands. While the government does not provide free phones and tablets itself, participating carriers, specializing in Lifeline services, often offer free unlimited calls and texts, with some also providing free smartphones and, more recently, tablets (especially if the company participates in both Lifeline and the new ACP).
Government ACP Program Free Phone and Tablet
The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), established by the FCC, aims to aid households struggling with internet access costs. While not universally available, it provides eligible households with discounts of up to $30/month for broadband service and up to $75/month for those on qualifying Tribal lands. ACP itself doesn’t provide free phones and tablets; instead, participating carriers may offer special deals that include complimentary devices. Additionally, eligible households can receive a one-time discount of up to $100 for purchasing a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet from participating providers, contributing between $10 and $50 toward the purchase.
How to Get Free Phone And Tablet From the Government Through the Lifeline/ACP Program in 2024
Here is my journey of acquiring a high-quality free government phone and tablet.
- First, I reviewed the Lifeline and ACP eligibility criteria. These two benefits are only available for low-income people who meet certain conditions. As such, it would be of no use to do anything else before I make absolutely sure that I qualify for these two programs. As my wish was to obtain both a free government phone and tablet, I knew that my chances would be much higher if I qualified for both programs.
- Secondly, when I was sure that I could qualify, I decided to get ready for the application process. I did so by gathering all the documents that I would potentially need during the application process and making copies of them. These documents serve as a way to prove your eligibility, as they are supposed to contain all the relevant information, including your full legal name, date of birth, address, income, and/or which assistance programs you participate in.
- Thirdly, I applied for Lifeline and ACP through the National Verifier – a system designed to review and either approve or reject applications. Granted, some Lifeline and ACP providers allow you to skip this step, as their own application process is designed to automatically send your application form to the National Verifier. However, as not all Lifeline/ACP companies offer this option, you should first apply through National Verifier on your own.
- I then proceeded to find a Lifeline and ACP company that offers free government phones and tablets in my area. I reviewed all the providers and selected the one that best suits my needs.
- Finally, I applied through my selected provider. Once the company reviewed my application form and recognized my eligibility, they notified me and I was delighted to receive my free government phone and tablet within a few business days. I then activated both devices and started to use my services and enjoy the devices.
As you can see, the whole process was really quick and simple. However, as you may not fully understand how and where you can review your eligibility or apply, or which documents you may need, etc., I prepared a comprehensive guide on each of these steps in the following sections.

Alternatively, if you choose to apply by mail, include physical copies of your documents with the completed application, placing all items in the same envelope. If you’re applying through a particular carrier, it’s advisable to reach out to their support team to inquire about the specific method for submitting the required documentation.

If you’ve made it this far, you are now a proud owner of a free government phone and tablet, like me.
What are The Benefits You Get After Qualified For The ACP Program And Lifeline Program in 2024
The benefits for both programs come in the form of discounts, which are as follows:
Lifeline Benefits:
- A monthly discount of $9.25 towards telecommunication bills, either wireless, landline, or internet services.
- For eligible customers living on Tribal lands, the discount is higher and is $34.25 per month.
- A free cell phone.
ACP Benefits:
- A discount of up to $30 per month towards broadband service for eligible households.
- A discount of up to $75 per month for households on qualifying Tribal lands.

The above are given benefits (provided by the government). However, there are many wireless carriers that decided to take the basic discounts to the next level for both ACP and Lifeline-eligible customers. As such, a free government phone and tablet may be attained in some cases. When it comes to ACP, even free or highly discounted laptops or PCs may be offered.
What are Lifeline Rules For Free Phone And Tablet?
Whether you apply with a carrier that will offer a free phone and tablet or not, Lifeline follows the same set of rules. They are as follows:
- Lifeline is only available to subscribers who can prove their eligibility. When you apply for Lifeline, you must show proof of participation in a qualifying program or proof of income.
- Every year, USAC will check to confirm you still qualify.
- If you change your address, no longer qualify for Lifeline, or more than one person in your household gets Lifeline, notify your company within 30 days.
- Only one discount is allowed per household, where a “household” is a group of people who live together and share income and expenses.
- If your Lifeline service is free, you must use it at least once every 30 days to maintain your service. If you don’t, you will get a 15-day notice to use it or it will get turned off.
- It is against the law to lie on any Lifeline-related forms or questionnaires.
Top Free Phone And Tablet Models in 2024
The Lifeline program provides devices determined by the carrier, typically basic or mid-range smartphones from reputable manufacturers like Samsung, LG, or Motorola. Specific models are not disclosed in advance, and offerings vary between states and plans. Some Lifeline providers may offer free iPhones, but this is uncommon. In contrast, the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) offers up to $100 for internet-connected devices like tablets, laptops, or desktop computers. While you might access the latest devices exceeding $100 in value, government rules mandate a mandatory co-pay between $10 and $50, making the device not entirely free but significantly discounted.
